Goodluck Jonathan Is Constitutionally Qualified To Run For Presidency By Mike Ozekhome (SAN)

Image
INTRODUCTION Nigeria is a country of one major news item per day. At times, one scandal per day. The hot issue in the polity currently generating national ruckus, hoopla and bedlam is the presumed intention of Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to run for the 2023 presidency. It does not matter that he has never himself confirmed to anyone, the swirling rumour about his purported planned defection from his opposition PDP party under which he was once elected President, to the ruling APC party. The discussants are prepared, as in now commonplace in Nigeria, to predict and to shave his hair in his absence.  I have carefully read the many arguments of those (I call them antagonists) who believe that Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is disqualified from contesting the 2023 presidential election. According to them, he had already done two terms of 4 years each and will thus be ineligible to contest for a third term. They cite the Fourth Alteration (No 16) Act, which was signed into an Act by

Thieves Steal $75,000 From APC Headquarters

Image
Reports say there was a bit of confusion at the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday as at least N43,000,000 reportedly went missing. Punch newspaper reports that the canopy under which the sale of forms took place was suddenly dismantled without explanation. It would be recalled that the party resorted to canopies due to the ongoing renovation/refurbishment works being carried out in the secretariat main building. It was gathered that the sum of $75,000 had gone missing amid the crowded struggle at the main entrance to the party premises. Party sources, however, disclosed that the missing money was in no way connected to the monies from the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms as aspirants are expected to make deposits in the designated account numbers before picking up their forms at the Buhari House. “It’s actually $75,000. You know there was a struggle at the gate when aspirants and supporters were trying to get in. “W

Breaking: CCT Chairman Fails In His Bid To Stop Senate Probe

Image
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja says the Nigerian Senate has the power to investigate Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar for alleged act of assault on a security guard at a shopping mall in Abuja. Delivering Judgement, Justice Inyang Ekwo, said the CCT boss has failed to display high moral public standards by his conduct and with the Code of Conduct Bureau being a product of an Act ratified by the National Assembly, it therefore has powers to investigate his conduct. Justice Ekwo stated that Umar’s suit seeking to stop his probe by the Senate lacked merit and was consequently dismissed. It would be recalled that on February 9 2022, the Senate asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to dismiss a suit filed by Umar seeking to stop his probe for alleged misconduct. Umar had initially gone to court to challenge the powers of the Senate to investigate him over an alleged assault he perpetrated against a security guard at the Banex Plaza in Abuja. He was

2023 Presidency: The Fairness I Know By Orji Uzor Kalu

Image
It is my desire and intention to run for the Presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I am committed to this pursuit, but I can’t make an official declaration to this regard  without the full support of other regions.  Everywhere in the world, politics is situational and that of Nigeria is exceptionally situational.  The situation in Nigeria is that without the support of other regions, it would amount to a shadow chase for a South Easterner to be President. This is the reason I have been in the frontline of the call that the two major political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should zone their presidential tickets to the South East as they did for the South West in 1999. In the absence of this zoning, I shall return to the Senate and stay away from the presidential contest. The reality is that the North is more advantageous to win elections in this democratic setting.  I am even shocked with the number of aspirants

Image
Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, ordered former Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to vacate his seat as a member representing Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro Federal Constituency of Bauchi State. Justice Okorowo aligned with the argument of the PDP that by defecting from the party that sponsored him to the ninth National Assembly before the expiration of his tenure, Dogara ought to vacate the seat as he was no longer qualified to partake in the activities of the lower house. The judge, who held that the action of the lawmaker is prohibited by law, agreed that the aim of Section 68(1)(g) was to check political prostitution among the legislators. “The judgment is therefore given in favour of the plaintiffs I hereby gr
