Yari Appeals To President Buhari To Allow Internal Democracy In APC

Image
Chairmanship aspirant in the forthcoming national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Abdulaziz Yari has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of the party to ensure that internal democracy is established in the party in order for it to be strong enough for the challenges of the 2023 general election. Image
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked 20 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressive Congress. The judgement followed a suit filed by the PDP marked FHC/ABJ/CS/975/2021. Justice Taiwo in a judgment, dismissed the defence argument that the PDP (plaintiff) had no locus standi (legal rights) to institute the case. Taiwo ruled that the argument of the lawmakers that there was rancour in the PDP which necessitated their defection to APC was a ploy to mislead the court. The judge, who granted all the reliefs sought by the PDP, held that it was disheartening that politicians in the country treat citizens as if they do not matter once they get into office. According to him, we cannot continue in sin and

Image
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has described as unfortunate a statement recently released by Nigeria's Secret Police, the department of state service in which labour organisations such as the NLC were alleged to be in cahoots with clandestine groups to allegedly cause unrest in the country, using the ongoing energy crisis and strike by University lecturers as excuse. In a statement personally signed by NLC President Ayuba Wabba, the labour leader said; "the attention of the Nigeria Labour Congress has been drawn to a press release by the Department of State Services (DSS) lumping labour unions in a list of clandestine groups allegedly organizing to subvert public order, unleash violence on our streets and destabilize the country. The linking of trade unions and by extension national labour centers with such subterfuge and criminality by the DSS is indeed very unfortunate and smacks of sheer mischief. The novel statutory provision had prohibited political appointees from voting as delegates in party conventions or congresses for the election or nomination of candidates. Delivering judgement on the suit challenging the constitutionality of the provision, the judge, Evelyn Anyadike, held that the section was “unconstitutional, invalid, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever.” Adjudging the provision to be in conflict with the Nigerian constitution, the judge held that it “ought to be struck down as it cannot stand when it is in violation of the clear provisions of the Constitution.” Mrs Anyadike ordered the Attorney General of the Federation to “forthwith delete the said Subsection 12 of Section 84 from the body of the Electoral Act, 2022”. I'm Still Governor Of Ebonyi, Umahi Says Court Judgement Removing Him From Office Was Fraudulent

Image
Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has declared that he is still in office, accusing Justice Inyang Ekwo of attempting to embarrass the All Progressives Congress (APC). A Federal High Court in Abuja had sacked Umahi, his deputy and 15 members of the Ebonyi assembly for defecting to the All Progressives Congress from the opposition People's Democratic Party. Speaking at a press conference in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi, on Tuesday, Umahi accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of procuring the judgement. In the first place, there is no constitutional provision for any hatchet man to remove a governor. “There are three ways whereby a governor can vacate his office: it is either by death, resignation and impeachment. There is no other constitutional provision that empowers a hatchet man to turn the Constitution upside down. “I have listened to the judgement of Inyang Ekwo and it
