Drug Trafficking: Court Declines Abba Kyari’s Bail Application

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, refused to grant the bail application of suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari. Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a ruling, said the application had been overtaken by events following an order of a sister court, granting the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency’s prayers to detain Kyari for another 14 days to enable it to conclude its investigation. Justice Ekwo held that the sister court, which gave the order in favour of NDLEA on February 22, was a court of coordinate jurisdiction. The judge, however, said he was inclined to hear Kyari’s fundamental enforcement rights suit with the urgency it deserves after the expiration of the 14-day court order. He then adjourned until March 15 to hear Kyari’s application to demand his fundamental right enforcement. PDP Calls For Cancelation of Imo By-Election, Says Process Was Massively Rigged

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged massive rigging and other malpractices in Saturday’s bye-election for the Ngor Okpala state constituency election in Imo State. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Blyden Amajirionwu, as the winner of the election. But the PDP in a statement signed by the state’s Chairman, Engr. Charles Ugwu alleged that the APC “covertly perfected an evil plot to prevent the people from exercising their constitutional mandate”. YPP Candidate Rejects Result of Ogoja/Yala Federal constituency By-Election

Candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the just concluded Ogoja/Yala Federal Constituency By-election in Cross River State,  Monkom Itegila Igbaji, has rejected the result of the election which  saw the emergence of Mr. Jude Ngaji of the  All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Ngaji winner of the February 26th 2022 legislative by-election after he polled  22,778 votes in both local government areas to beat his closest opponent, Mike Usibe of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who garnered 20,590 votes which is 2,188 fewer than those of the APC candidate. The remaining seven candidates including that of the YPP garnered 460 votes in an election that was heavily militarized and marred with shootings and snatching of election materials. Ukraine: Pressure Mounts on FIFA to Expel Russia From 2022 World Cup

Russia should be expelled from the 2022 World Cup after invading Ukraine, French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet told Le Parisien newspaper on Sunday. On the fourth day of the invasion, Ukrainians and  Russians said they were ready for talks to halt a conflict that has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes. France were crowned world champions in 2018 after beating Croatia in the final in Moscow. “The world of sport, and especially football, cannot remain neutral. I certainly would not oppose the expulsion of Russia,” said Le Graet. Poland, Sweden and the Czech Republic have all refused to play Russia in the World Cup play-offs. Poland are due to play Russia in Moscow on March 24 and should the hosts win they would host the winners of the match between the Czechs and the Swedes on March 29. Le Graet concurred with the trio’s stance. “In these dramatic circumstances, how can one envisage playing football against this country,” he said.

Bielsa Dumps Leeds After Poor Run of Results

Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has "parted company" with Leeds United after a run of poor form which saw his side suffer several heavy defeats. The 66-year-old Argentine, appointed in June 2018, leaves with the Whites two points above the relegation zone. NCC Alerts Nigerians Of Dangerous Malware Stealing Details of Bank Apps

The Nigerian Communications Commission’s Computer Security Incident Response Team has warned Nigerians about a newly discovered malicious software stealing users’ banking app login credentials on Android devices. According to the commission, the malicious software called ‘Xenomorph’, which has been found to target 56 financial institutions from Europe, has a high impact and high vulnerability rate. It added that the main intent of this malware was to steal credentials, combined with the use of SMS and notification interception to log-in and potential two-factor authentication tokens. INEC Announces New Dates For 2023 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced new dates for the 2023 elections. This was announced by the National Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu at a news conference in Abuja, the Federal capital. According to him, the Presidential and National Assembly elections will now hold on Saturday, February 25, 2023, while governorship and state houses of assembly elections will hold on March 11, 2023. Evacuating 5,600 Nigerians From Ukraine Is Too Risky - Federal Government

The Federal Government on Friday said there can be no evacuation of Nigerians in Ukraine until the airports in the European country, which is under attack by Russia, are reopened. The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, in the early hours of Thursday, had ordered an invasion of Ukraine. The invasion was marked with shelling and rocket attacks on several Ukrainian major cities, including the capital, Kyiv, leading to dozens of deaths. The invasion, which has continued, has created widespread panic and seen many fleeing Ukraine. Countries such as India, South Africa, among others had announced the facilitation of the evacuation of their nationals from Ukraine to neighbouring Poland by setting up offices at the Ukrainian-Polish borders. The  International Press Centre  (IPC), Lagos-Nigeria has expressed delight at the release of the abducted News Crew of The Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS), who were taken by unknown gunmen on Wednesday, February 23, 2022, while covering the 2022 Enugu local government elections. Reports say the crew were attacked at Obeagu in Enugu South local government area on their way to Agbani, Nkanu West local government area. Police Recover N34M From Robbers Who Raided Uromi Banks

The Public relations Officer of Edo State Police Command, Bello Kotongs, has confirmed the recovery of about N34 million from the armed robbers who raided five banks in Uromi, headquarters of Esan North-East Local Government Area of Edo State. The armed gang had broken into Zenith, UBA, Unity, First and Union Banks in Uromi, gunning down seven persons, including two security personnel. While escaping through Ubiaja axis of a neighbouring LGA after the operation, some youths were said to have blocked the road which forced the robbers to abandon the items recovered by the police. The Ikeja Chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has lauded the sentence of life imprisonment given to kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike alias Evans, by an Ikeja High Court. Justice Hakeem Oshodi on Friday sentenced Evans and two of his co-accused,  Uche Amadi and Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu, to life imprisonment after finding the trio guilty of a three-count charge of conspiracy and kidnapping. Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the Chairman of the Ikeja Chapter of the NBA, Mr Bartholomew Aguegbodo,  lauded the verdict. “The sentence is not surprising. Russia Invasion: FG Assures Nigerians of Safe Evacuation From Ukraine

The Federal Government on Friday assured Nigerians living in Ukraine of their safe evacuation amidst the Russia multiple attacks of Ukraine. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama gave the assurance while speaking to newsmen in Abuja. Onyeama said the Federal Government was making arrangements for a special flight operation to evacuate her citizens from Ukraine in view of the escalating tension between that country and Russia. INEC to Disclose Position on Electoral Act On Saturday

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it will on Saturday make public its position on the 2022 Electoral Amendment Bill signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday. The commission disclosed this in a statement by National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, in Abuja on Friday. Okoye said that the commission’s submission would be made known after INEC extraordinary meeting scheduled for Saturday. He described the signing of the bill as historic being the fourth time since the restoration of democracy in 1999 that it would repealed and re-enacted. Manchester United have ended their sponsorship deal with Aeroflot following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Red Devils have had a partnership with the Russian airline since 2013, and have regularly flown to European matches on the company’s aircrafts. However, Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine has led Manchester United to sever their ties to the company. “In light of events in Ukraine, we have withdrawn Aeroflot’s sponsorship rights,” a spokesperson said Friday. “We share the concerns of our fans around the world and extend our sympathies to those affected.” Manchester United used charter airline Titan Airways for their UEFA Champions League last-16 away leg against Atletico Madrid earlier this week. The British Government has banned Aeroflot flights to the UK as part of its package of sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine.

Senate Commends Buhari For Signing Electoral Act Amendment Bill

The Senate has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Electoral Bill which is now the legislative framework for the conduct of elections in Nigeria.  A statement by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Ajibola Basiru Ph.D. congratulated the 9th Assembly for the innovative provisions in the Electoral Act that addressed obvious lapses that have inhibited credible elections in Nigeria.  He identified the conduct of primaries, campaign expenses, use of technological devices in elections, electronic transmission of results, review results declared by an electoral officer under duress as some of the reforms introduced that will ensure the credibility of elections in Nigeria.  He stated that the Senate has taken notice of Section 84(12) of the Act, especially the concerns raised by Mr. President, and assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will give the section the desired legislative attention.

President Muhammadu Buhari has signed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022 into law. Punch newspaper reports that the President signed the Bill at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, on Friday. The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, were present to witness the signing of the Bill.

APC Crisis: Okorocha Proffers Solutions, Says Justice Is Needed For Peace

ASUU Strike To End Soon - Federal Government

The Federal Government has assured that the ongoing strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would be called off soon, saying it was taken aback by the renewed strike which university teachers  embarked on February 14, 2022.
