Senate Set To End Yearly Rent Payment In Abuja

Image
The Senate has passed for first reading, the Advanced Rent for residential apartments, office spaces etc Bill 2022. The Bill sponsored by Senator Smart Adeyemi representing Kogi West Senatorial district, seeks to make it mandatory for landlords in Abuja to stop collecting one year and in some cases two year rent. Addressing newsmen shortly after Tuesday's plenary, the lawmaker said the reason for setting up the Bill is to reduce the stress poor Nigerians go through in assessing accommodation. He said the proposed law demands that landlords collect three months rent from new tenants after which monthly rent will be collected instead of the usual annual rent. Senator Adeyemi also stated that the 9th Senate is committed to ensuring that the Bill is passed and will not succumb to Intimidation from property owners who are already jittery following the announcement of the first reading of the Bill. He urged the various states of the federation to domesticate the law when it i

Court Orders DSS To Allow Nnamdi Kanu Change of Cloths, Adjourns Case To Wednesday

Image
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, on Tuesday, adjourned further proceedings in the case against the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, till Wednesday. The adjournment followed Kanu’s complaints that the Federal Government failed to promptly serve him the fresh 15 amended charges it brought before the court. Kanu, through his team of lawyers led by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome, further accused the Federal Government of denying him the necessary facility to defend the charge against him. Ozekhome told the court that the amended charges were served on them barely 24 hours to the scheduled hearing. “My Lord, the proposed amended charges were served on us yesterday (Monday) evening. As I speak to you, my lord, the defendant, who was just brought in, has not even seen the charges which he is being told to enter his plea. “With due respect, that is not justice. It is ambushing. I know that the Administration of Criminal Justi

Principled Political Choices are Not Betrayal By Sen. Babafemi Ojudu

Image
I have seen a statement made by me, many years ago, to celebrate the 60th birthday anniversary of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu making the rounds. Yes I did make that statement. And more of such will come in my autobiography. We, together, have seen good days and bad days.  I and Bola Tinubu have come a long way and we have been there for each other. So let no one use my acknowledgment of his good deeds and my refusal not to support him in his bid for Nigeria presidency to portray me as a betrayer.  Tinubu remains my leader and I will forever cherish him and the contributions he made to my Organisation during our fight against the military.  He however knows I don’t follow the herd. I make my choices based on very rigid parameters . He will tell you I am very Independent in my actions and ways.  As a third year university student my dad chose to be in NPN. I never considered the fact that he fed me and paid my school fees to join him in a party I despised.  I went to UPN and be

Why Bola Tinubu Must Never Be Nigeria’s President By Festus Adedayo

So I was at the Alausa Governor’s Office in Lagos. Accessing the governor was like seeking needle in a haystack. His Press Secretary sent words up that an irritant interloper had come to ferret response to a newsmagazine’s damming expose on the governor. After hours of waiting, a commissioner (names withheld) sauntered in and met me where I sat immovably like Mount Kilimanjaro. “You can’t write that story,” he began in a steely voice sauced with veiled threats. “Go back to Ibadan. We will talk to your boss.” That was how the story never saw the light of the day. The Nigerian Tribune, of which I was its Features Editor during this period, had sent me in pursuit of the facts or fiction surrounding the news magazine report. The principal of that ancient school, Government College Ibadan, (GCI) at the time had suddenly gone AWOL, incommunicado and inaccessible as the proverbial excrement of the masquerade. Grapevines alleged that Alhaji Lam Adesina, then governor of Oyo State,

Tinubu’s Presidency: Affliction Must Not Rise a Second Time By Abimbola Adelakun

Image
We always knew the day would come when former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, would declare his interest in running for president. In a country where politics is about seizing power, his presidential ambition has been especially obsessive. After leaving government in 2007, he has been calculatedly amassing the resources that will land him in Aso Rock. Unfortunately, Nigeria cannot afford a Tinubu presidency. Following the Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)’s locust years with the impotence that Tinubu’s leadership portends is to doom the country. After eight years of maladministration by Buhari, we cannot waste one more day of our national life on another deadwood. Nigeria urgently needs a turning point. Everybody—including even some of Tinubu’s close associates—knows that he does not represent the future. Some things should be left where they were buried, and that includes Tinubu’s presidential dreams. To preempt the spin doctors and churnalists, whose rejoinder

Ahmad Lawan’s Principles of Politics And Leadership By Ola Awoniyi

Image
When Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan graduated from the University of Maiduguri in 1984 with a B.Sc. degree in Geography, taking an active role in partisan politics was not on his mind. The young man did not consider himself cut for the "dirty game." Rather, his focus was firmly on academics. And so for the next 10 years, he was in the Ivory Tower researching and imparting knowledge for the enlightenment and development of society. He was good enough at what he was doing such that in 1990, he was offered a scholarship by the European Union, one of a very few from the northern part of Nigeria at the time to be offered the privilege.   Lawan went to Cranfield University, United Kingdom and returned home in 1996 with Masters and Doctoral degrees in Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System(GIS). He resumed his career in academics, until 1998 when he was persuaded to join politics. New in the game, Lawan quckly realised that politics is different from academics. It is safe

Buhari Was Pressured By Nigerians To Run For President - Garba Shehu

Image
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, has said President Muhammadu Buhari, was persuaded and pressured by Nigerians to run for president. He was reacting to some comments delivered by the President on his plans for the 2023 presidential election. Buhari had, in an interview aired on  NTA , on Thursday, said he had given his best to Nigeria, just as he said he was looking forward to when he would be less busy after leaving office in 2023. The President said, “About my age, I see my colleagues, they are now resting, and I assure you that I look forward to the next 17 months when I too will be less busy. “The age is telling on me, working now for six, seven to eight hours per day in the office is no joke — there are questions of executive council, memos from as many states as possible to be considered virtually every week. Really, it’s a lot of hard work, but as I’ve said, I asked for it and I cannot complain. “I have been a go

Uzodinma Fails To Name Sponsors of Insecurity In Imo

Image
The Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma on Tuesday failed to mention the names of sponsors of insecurity in Imo state, as he earlier promised to release the names on the 4th of January, 2022. Vanguard newspaper monitored the governor’s speech at the government house in Owerri, during the Imo state stakeholders meeting/luncheon and reports that the governor failed to fulfill his promise. Uzodinma however called on the former governor of Imo state and the Senator representing Imo West Senatorial district, Rochas Okorocha, to allow him to rule Imo state in peace. He further said he would allow the security agencies to finish up their investigation on the sponsors of insecurity. The governor simply said: “Let us allow the security agencies to finish their investigation and reveal the names of the sponsors of insecurity and they will be arrested. “The difference between former Governor Okorocha and others who have ruled this state was that he wants to be the governor when h

Messi Tests Positive For Covid-19

Image
Lionel Messi has tested positive for Covid-19 and has entered self-isolation, his club Paris Saint-Germain announced on Sunday. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was one of four PSG players to test positive for the virus ahead of a French Cup match against Vannes. The Argentinian star has endured a difficult start to life in the French capital since an emotional exit from Barcelona last summer. Messi has scored only one goal in 11 league appearances for PSG, although he has netted five times in the Champions League. He will miss Monday’s cup tie and will likely also be sidelined for PSG’s first Ligue 1 match since the winter break, at Lyon next Sunday. The other players to test positive were full-back Juan Bernat, back-up goalkeeper Sergio Rico and teenage midfielder Nathan Bitumazala. “They are currently respecting isolation and are subject to the appropriate health protocols,” PSG said. The number of Covid cases in France has topped 200,000 a da

The Validity Of Lawan’s ‘Correctness’ On Harmony Between The Executive And Legislature By Dr. Ezrel Tabiowo

Image
Before he ventured to contest the Senate Presidency, Senator Ahmad Lawan, had a clear-cut vision in his legislative agenda which some at the time considered a rather tall order.   One of the most ambitious of them was his bid to restore the nation’s deformed budget cycle to the January to December timeline.   The country for twenty years between 1999 and 2019 had operated an irregular budget cycle from the  administration of Olusegun Obasanjo all through to the first tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.  Determined to correct the anomaly which for long had weighed down the Nigerian economy from making steady progress, Lawan understood he needed to come up with a leadership model or, if you like, a stopgap that would  adequately address the bureaucratic setbacks that hitherto frustrated the nation’s budgetary processes in the past.  In coming up with his unique leadership model, the Senate President, one of Nigeria’s seasoned and longest serving legislators, un

Kidnap Suspect Says He Learnt The Act By Watching Movies Featuring Zubby Michael

Ayodele was arrested for abducting a six-year-old boy, Ebube Eze, after the victim’s father sent a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba. The 23-year-old was nabbed by the Force Intelligence Response Team headed by Tunji Disu. According to  Vanguard , the victim was kidnapped from Remson Group of Schools, located in Ojo Alaba area of Lagos, and was kept hostage for four days until a ransom of N550,000 was paid for his release. New Year: NLC Vows To Frustrate Anti People Policies Created By Government

Image
The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), on Saturday warned the Federal Government to halt all its policies affecting living standard of Nigerians in 2022, saying it would resist every attempt to inflict more pains on the citizens. The Congress also warned some State governors who have persistently denied pensioners of their rights  and workers their minimum wage, to  stop henceforth as their action has forced workers and pensioners into more poverty. NLC President, Ayuba Wabba in a new Year message which he personally signed,  said the labour movement is concerned about ''the deceit and duplicity associated with the politics of petrol price increase” by successive Nigerian governments. Wabba said, ''Our argument has been that there is a limit to the imposition of hardship and suffering on the fragile shoulders of the Nigerian people. ''It is gratifying that amidst the deteriorating conditions of living, Organized Labour was able to rise up to ensure that

Of Fake Prophets, Marabouts And End-Of-Year Doomsday Predictors By Mike Ozekhome

Image
As the year comes to an end, Nigerians will soon be regaled, entertained and gripped with the theatricals and Baba Sala's Alawada Kerikeri histrionics of many fake Prophets, Imams and marabouts that generously abound in the Nigerian religious space today. Nigerians may not be irreligious nor unreligious, afterall. But, many are superficially religious without actually being religious, holy or Christ-like. Many are gullible and easily susceptible to the beguiling wiles, shemes and false prophesies dished out yearly by so called men and women of God. Some await these doomsday prophesies with relish, eclat and bated animation. Some do with fear,  anxiety and suspense. Once in a while, some prophesies appear to come true. Afterall a Minister that dies after a prophet globally 'profesies' that "a prominent politician will die"; and a Governor that defects from his now suffocating political party on whose platform he ascended to office, is attributed to the
