President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigerians that last Friday’s abduction of female students from Government Girls Science Secondary School, Jangebe, will be the last to happen. The Department of State Services (DSS) says the arrest of Mallam Salihu Tanko-Yakassai, the Media Aide to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State followed issues beyond the expression of opinion in social media. The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Dr Peter Afunanya, announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. “This is to confirm that Salihu Tanko-Yakasai is with the DSS and he is being investigated over issues beyond the expression of opinions in the social media as wrongly alleged by sections of the public,’’ he stated.r It would be recalled that Governor Ganduje, on Saturday, sacked the media adviser over alleged unguarded comments and utterances. He said Tanko-Yakassai failed to differentiate between personal opinion and official stand on matters of public concern. Niger Governor Bello Receives Rescued Kagara School Students, Others

Governor Abubkara Sani-Bello of Niger on Saturday received the abducted students and staff of Government Science College, Kagara, whom were released by their captors. The 27 students, 12 staff and 12 members of a family in the school were abducted by gunmen on Feb. 17. Bello, while receiving the victims, disclosed that 38 students and staff of the school were released by the abductors “I am happy to announce this afternoon the rescue of the 38 abducted students at about 4 a.m. All rescued victims are here, though one is in the hospital suffering from excessive exhaustion. ” They are being medically checked and will be monitored for a few days before they are reunited with their families,” he said.. The governor said one of the victims is receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Minna. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, has relieved his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Salihu Tanko Yakassai of his appointment for making unguarded social media comment. This is contained in a statement by Malam Muhammad Garba, the state’s Commissioner for Information on Saturday in Kano. Garba said the sack was effective with immediate effect. He said Tanko was sacked because he failed to differentiate between personal and official position, on matters of public concern and therefore could not be allowed to continue to serve in a government he never believed in. Garba warned all political appointees and public servants to guard against statements capable of generating controversies. Bandits have finally released the abducted Kagara Government Science College students, their teachers and family members. Reports by Vanguard say they were released in the early hours of today (Saturday). The paper said its Correspondent reliably gathered that the abductees are on their way to Minna and should be in the Niger State capital in a couple of hours. The Chief Press Secretary, Mary Noel-Berje,  when contacted said though she heard about the release but that she has not been officially informed. Trying to play safe, she said: “I heard about the release but I have not been officially informed because there are still some challenges. It is when they finally arrive here in Minna and received by Governor Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello before we really believe and celebrate,” she remarked.

Senate President Condemns Abduction of Zamfara Secondary Schoolgirls

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has condemned the attack on Friday on Government Secondary School, Jangebe in Zamfara State where hundreds of schoolgirls were abducted. Lawan expressed sadness and outrage that the incident happened while efforts were still being made to rescue those abducted just over a week ago at another secondary school in Kagara, Niger State. The Senate President through a press statement signed by his media aide, Ola Awoniyi, said the recurrent attacks on schools and other acts of banditry call for intense soul searching on how the nation arrived at this sorry pass and how to cage the monster of violent crimes in Nigeria. Lawan expressed his sympathy for the abducted schoolgirls and urged the authorities at all levels to work together to ensure their immediate rescue. The Senate President also reiterated his call on the state authorities to accord priority to securing schools and other locations now seen as soft targets by savage criminals.

Breaking: Hundreds of School Girls Abducted in Fresh School Attack in Zamfara

Armed bandits have attacked a girls secondary school in Zamfara State, kidnapping many female students, the BBC is reporting. The attack reportedly occurred at the Government Girls Secondary School, Jangebe in Talata Mafara Local Government Area of Zamfara State Friday morning. A teacher in the school confirmed the attack to BBC Hausa with the number of kidnapped students said to be close to 300. Zamfara in Northwest Nigeria is one of the states most affected by bandits’ attacks. The attacks have continued despite negotiations initiated by the state government with the bandits. The latest attack on the Zamara school occurs about two weeks after over 20 students were abducted by armed bandits from a school in Niger State. The students in Niger were yet to be released at the time of this report.

NASU, SSANU Suspends Strike

The leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the non-teaching staff unions of universities has announced the suspension of its three week old strike with effect from midnight of today, January 26. JAC non-teaching staff comprises of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of the Universities (NASU). Addressing Journalists after the Conciliatory meeting with the Federal Government, the NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi, said the union agreed to suspend the national strike after extracting some concessions from the Federal Government. He said that the union's demand have been harmonized to the satisfaction of both parties, just as he stressed that they will continue to monitor the agreements that have been reached with timeline, to ensure that government implement its own side of the bargain. The woman will receive 50,000 yuan ($7,700; £5,460) for five years of unpaid labour. Senate Confirms Abdulrasheed Bawa As EFCC Chairman

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC). Forty year old Bawa was confirmed on Wednesday after an open screening on the floor of the Senate by lawmakers.  In his opening remark, Bawa said his primary aim among others is to repatriate all stolen assets back to the country. Responding to Senator Adamu Aliero's question on the controversial sale of seized assets to proxies during his time as Zonal Head of the agency in Port Harcourt, Bawa said the allegations were untrue. According to him, such powers only rest with the Secretary of the EFCC, Mohammed Abba. NAF Confirms Crash of its Beechcraft King Air B350

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) says its Beechcraft King Air B350 aircraft crashed while returning to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, after reporting engine failure enroute Minna. The Director of Public Relations and Information, NAF Headquarters, AVM Ibikunle Daramola, announced this in a statement on Sunday in Abuja. According to the statement, first responders are at the scene, but sadly, all the seven personnel on board died in the crash. He said that the Chief of Air Staff, AVM Oladayo Amao, had directed an immediate investigation into the incident. He urged the public to remain calm and await the outcome of investigation. Amao, on behalf of all NAF personnel, commiserated with the families of the deceased, the statement said. Reports say six persons were feared dead when a military jet crashed in Abuja on Sunday. According to officials of the Federal Ministry of Aviation, the jet owned by the Nigeria Air Force reported an engine failure at about 10.39am before the crash. The incident was also confirmed by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, who identified the military aircraft as King Air 350. He disclosed this in a tweet, saying, “A military aircraft King Air 350 has just crashed short of our Abuja runway after reporting engine failure enroute Minna. It appears to be fatal. We should remain calm & wait for the outcome of investigation by the military, while we pray for the departed soul/souls if any.” Firefighters are currently on the ground battling to put out the fire at the site of the crash.

The immediate past Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Dikko, is dead. Punch newspaper reports that the Katsina State indigene, who led the NCS from 2009 to 2015, died after a protracted illness. The former customs boss had been facing a probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission. His house said to be worth N1.1bn as well as cars worth hundreds of millions of naira were seized by the EFCC under the leadership of erstwhile Chairman, Ibrahim Magu. However, his case could not proceed due to his failing health. In December 2020, the ICPC and its Chairman, Prof Bolaji Owasanoye, were restrained from arresting and prosecuting Dikko.

The Senate committee on foreign affairs  is currently screening former Service Chiefs for the position of non career ambassadors. It would be recalled that barely a week after they were disengaged from service and their replacements announced, a statement by the president’s media aide, Femi Adesina, said the President Buhari had forwarded the ex-service chiefs’ names to the Senate for confirmation as non-career ambassadors. They are the former Chief of Defence Staff, Gabriel Olonisakin; former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; former Chief of Air Staff, Ibok Ibas; and former Chief of Naval Staff, Abubakar Sadique.

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in the country due to the current security challenges. The Senate’s resolution was sequel to a Point of Order raised by Sen. Sani Musa (APC-Niger) during Wednesday’s plenary. Marketers Sell Petrol at N170 Per Litre as Shortage Hits Market

Fuel marketers have started adjusting their petrol pump prices amid the supply shortage facing private depots in Apapa. Punch newapaper reports that some filling stations in Lagos and Ogun states increased the pump price of petrol to N170 per litre on Tuesday from N162 per litre. Some of the stations were Capital Oil and Gas, Fatgbems and Amo Oil, all along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Another station, Enyo Retail, adjusted its pump price to N165 per litre from N162. The National Operation Controller, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr Mike Osatuyi, says members of his association had to increase the pump price because they bought the product at N160-N161 from depot owners. A large number of students, whose exact figure, is yet unknown, have been abducted by armed bandits at Government Science College (GSC) Kagara, in Niger State. The bandits in military uniforms, PRNigeria learnt, stormed the school premises with close to1000 students on Tuesday night, overpowered the security guard, before whisking away the students. Premium Times reports that some students escaped after the raid. A headcount was being conducted at the school in the wee hours of Wednesday to ascertain the actual number of missing students. But PRNigeria also gathered that security agencies were able to detect the coordinate and nature of the area, and have started tracing the bandits’ movement while NAF aircraft have been seen hovering in the air to track the location of the students.

Senate Receives Buhari’s Request to Confirm Bawa as EFCC Chairman

The Senate on Tuesday received a formal request from President Muhammadu Buhari seeking the confirmation of appointment of Abdulrasheed Bawa as Chairman of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).  The letter which was addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, was read during the start of plenary.  According to President Buhari, the request to screen and confirm Bawa’s appointment as Substantive Chairman of the Commission was “in accordance with paragraph 2 subsection 2 of Part 1 CAP E1 of the EFCC Act 2004.” Bawa, aged 40, who holds a B.Sc degree in Economics, and Masters in International Affairs and Diplomacy, is presently the Head of Operations of the Commission’s Lagos office. President Muhamadu Buhari has asked the Senate to confirm Mr Abdulrasheed Bawa as substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) In a letter to President of the Senate, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said he was acting in accordance with Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC Act 2004. Bawa, 40, is a trained EFCC investigator with vast experience in the investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud, money laundering, and other economic crimes.

2020 WASCE: WAEC Withholds 5,548 Results Over Exam Malpractices

Results of 5,548 candidates who participated at the 2020 Second Series of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates have been withheld over various cases of malpractice. Mr Patrick Areghan, Head of National Office (HNO), West African Examinations Council (WAEC),  organisers of the examination, disclosed this while announcing the release of the examination result on Monday in Lagos. The WAEC boss also noted that of the 61, 509 candidates that sat for the examination, a total of 61,111 representing 99.35 per cent had their results fully processed and released. He said that results of 398 others, representing 0.65 per cent, have a few of their subjects still being processed due to some errors traceable to the candidates. Nigeria Records 29 Cases of COVID-19 Variant Found in UK – NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says it has confirmed 29 cases of the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 UK variant in the country. Its Director-General, Dr Chikwe Iheakwazu, said at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing on Monday in Abuja that the new variant had spread across six states in Nigeria. “We have now confirmed a total of 29 cases of the B.1.1.7 variant, and this has been confirmed in Edo, Kwara, Lagos, Osun, Oyo and FCT,” Iheakwazu said. The B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant was first detected in UK and have since spread to other parts of the world. The B.1.1.7 variant, which health experts described as highly infectious, had spread to more than 80 countries, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Iheakwazu commended scientists working at the Africa Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases (ACEGID), Redeemers University in Ede in Osun state, for their efforts in detecting the variants. US Senate Acquits Trump of Inciting Capitol Hill Insurrection

The US Senate has fallen short of the two-thirds majority needed to convict former President Donald Trump on a charge of incitement to insurrection over the Capitol riot on 6 January. A majority of senators - 57 to 43, including seven Republicans - voted to convict Mr Trump, 10 votes short of the 67 required for conviction. After his acquittal, Mr Trump released a statement denouncing the trial as "the greatest witch hunt in history". This was Mr Trump's second impeachment. If he had been convicted, the Senate could have voted to bar him from running for office ever again. After the vote, the senior Republican in Congress, Senator Mitch McConnell said Mr Trump had been "responsible" for the assault on the Capitol and called it a "disgraceful, disgraceful dereliction of duty". Breaking: Police Arrest Macaroni at Lekki Toll Gate

Police have arrested popular comedian Debo Adebayo, also known as Mr Macaroni, at the Lekki toll gate. The comedian joined other protesters at the tollgate to express his dissatisfaction with the decision of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry allowing the Lekki Concession Company to reopen the Lekki tollgate on Saturday. Adebayo was arrested after the police told him “we don’t want you here”. In a  Live Instagram   before his phone and those of other arrested protesters were seized, the comedian lamented that “Lekki is  under military rule.” He said, “How did you think the reopening of tollgate is the next line of action? Following the claim by the Imo state government that it has recovered the Eastern Palm University located in Ogboko, Ideato South LGA (the home town of former governor of the state, Senator Rochas Okorocha), the former governor has appealed to the general public to disregard the claim.
