US Forces Rescue Kidnapped American in Nigeria

US forces have rescued an American hostage in Nigeria, the Pentagon said Saturday. The man was abducted in Niger and taken across the border to Nigeria, where US forces freed him without suffering any casualties, it said. “The United States is committed to the safe return of all US citizens taken captive,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a separate statement. “We delivered on that commitment late last night in Nigeria, where some of our bravest and most skilled warriors rescued a US citizen,” he added. The hostage was identified in Niger as Philip Walton. He is now safe and in the care of the US State Department, the Pentagon said.

Sean Connery: James Bond Actor Dies Aged 90

Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family has said. The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers. Sir Sean died peacefully in his sleep in the Bahamas, having been "unwell for some time", his son said. His acting career spanned five decades and he won an Oscar in 1988 for his role in The Untouchables. Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Highlander, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock. The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has inaugurated a 9-Man Committee for the assessment of losses suffered by the Nigeria Police Force during the ENDSARS Protests across the country.  The IGP, during the inauguration program which held at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, noted that the setting up of the Assessment Committee is informed by the need to properly document the losses suffered by the Force for the purposes of strategic planning, re-construction and re-equipment as well as for future reference.  In a statement signed by Force PRO Frank Mba, the IGP observed that the Force encountered huge losses in terms of human and material resources during the ENDSARS protests which commenced on a rather peaceful note but unfortunately degenerated into violence, loss of lives and wanton destruction of property.     The Committee, which has CP Abutu Yaro as Chairman, was charged by the IGP to see the assignment as a call to service which must be undertaken with purpo

Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has expressed shock and sadness over the accident that claimed lives of several pupils and staff of Presentation Nursery and Primary School, Awgu, Enugu State during the week, describing it as horrific. Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, on Wednesday night, ordered the reinstatement of his Special Adviser on Media, Salihu Yakasai. It would be recalled that on October 11, 2020, Yakasai lambasted President  Muhammadu Buhari, for not addressing Nigerians amid national outrage as well as days of online and offline protests against the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Nigeria Police Force. Yakasai, who tweeted through his handle, @dawisu, had said the President has no empathy for Nigerians by his inaction. Reacting in a statement, the Kano State Government had described Yakasai's comments as “unguarded utterances” and suspended him“ with immediate effect”. Court Refuses to Order Diezani’s Arrest

The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Wednesday, rejected the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s request to issue a warrant of arrest against a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Alison -Madueke, who is believed to be residing in the United Kingdom. Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu rejected the EFCC’s request for an arrest warrant citing the commission’s failure to enforce the earlier criminal summons which the court issued on the former minister as far back as July 24, 2020. The commission had in requesting for the criminal summons in July claimed that it was required to facilitate the ex -minister’s extradition to Nigeria. Faced with the failure of the ex-minister to honour the summons on Wednesday, the EFCC, through its lawyer, Mr Farouk Abdullah, urged Justice Ojukwu to issue a warrant of arrest against her. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps NCDC has punished a Corps Assistant Illiya Ibrahim of the Gwagwalada Division Abuja by dismissing him from the service in relation to the looting of Covid-19 palliatives discovered in a warehouse in Gwagwalada, Abuja. The Media Assistant to the Commandant General NSCDC, Ekunola Gbenga, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday evening. The Federal Government has declared Thursday as a public holiday to mark this year’s Eid-el Maolud celebration in commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad. The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who made the declaration on behalf of the government, congratulated the Muslim faithful both at home and abroad for witnessing this year’s occasion. President Muhammadu Buhari has reappointed Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for another five-year term. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday. Adesina disclosed that President Buhari had nominated Professor Yakubu for an appointment as INEC chairman for a second and final term in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan. He explained that the President’s action was in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended). Police Deploy Helicopter as Looters Break into Abuja NYSC Camp

Reports say hoodlums have invaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Kubwa, Abuja. The hoodlums, in large number, carted away the foodstuff and mattresses meant for the Corps members when the orientation programme resumes on November 9. Security men at the scene shot sporadic gunshots to deter the miscreants. A police helicopter was also sighted flying towards the scene.

The Nigeria Labour Congress has urged federal and state governments to release forthwith, all COVID -19 palliatives still stored in warehouses across the country. The union also condemned the mass looting of both COVID - 19 palliatives and non -COVID - 19 items in the country. This was contained in a statement on Monday titled, ‘NLC Demands The Immediate Release Of All COVID -19 Palliatives And Relief Welfare Materials’. The National Broadcasting Commission has NBC has fined Channels Television, Arise Television and Africa Independent Television for what it termed “unprofessional coverage” of the #EndSARS protests. The acting Director - General of the NBC, Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, announced the fine of N3 million each at a press conference in Abuja on Monday. The NBC had last week warned all television and radio stations against reporting the #EndSARS protests in a manner that could embarrass the government or private individuals or cause disaffection, incite to panic or rift in the society. Looting Continues Across Nigeria as Mob Take Over ‘COVID-19 palliatives’ Warehouse in Abuja

A mob broke into another warehouse in the federal capital territory (FCT) carting away supplies said to be COVID-19 palliatives. The crowd invaded the warehouse located in Gwagwalada area council about 9am on Monday. It is said to be owned by the FCT administration under the agricultural and rural development secretariat. Reports say thousands of bags of grains, including rice as well as cartons of noodles were stored in the warehouse. Residents and passersby were seen storming out of the building with as much as they could carry — some had just one bag of rice while others loaded up to three bags. In a video of the scene shared on Twitter, the recorder said: “Somebody that just came out now said the things inside are more than enough. Protesters Set Zik’s Statue Ablaze in Anambra

Protesters in Anambra State have destroyed the statue of Nigeria’s first president Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, erected in Onitsha. The hoodlums are suspected to be some of those who hijacked the #EndSARS protest to wreak havoc. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the statute, located at Dennis Memorial Grammar School roundabout in Onitsha, was erected months ago by Governor Willie Obiano to further beautify the city. Some hoodlums in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, hiding under the #EndSARS protest, broke into the Oluyole Ibadan residence of the representative of the Oyo Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Teslim Folarin, located at Oluyole Estate, Ibadan, on Saturday. It was gathered that the hoodlums shattered the entrance doors and windows of the politician's house carting away some of his personal effects worth millions of naira. The serving Senator confirmed the incident on Fresh 105.9FM on Saturday during a telephone interview. Folarin stated that no fewer than 300 motorcycles, deep freezers, and food items, which were meant for the empowerment of his constituents, were looted. The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo - Olu, has announced the easing of the curfew imposed on the state. The governor said people are allowed to go out between 8 am and 6 pm from Saturday. He said, “We have decided that we are going to be easing the curfew from tomorrow (Saturday) morning; and what that easing means is that people will be allowed to go out from 8 am to 6 pm. “For emphasis, from 8 am tomorrow morning, you will be allowed to go out, to go wherever you wish till 6 pm in the evening.” Sanwo - Olu said this during a televised press briefing at the Lagos House in Marina. on Friday. A former Assistant Director with the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, has spoken on the viral video which was recorded in Wuse 2, Abuja, showing men in suits conveying armed thugs in a black Sports Utility Vehicle to attack protesters. Amachree said on  Channels Television ’s Sunrise Daily programme that the men in suits were not DSS officials but actually aides to a senator. He said just as the DSS had been able to identify and arrest impersonators, the Nigerian Army ought to do the same rather than just claim that those who opened fire on protesters at the Lekki toll plaza may have been impersonators. President Muhammadu Buhari is currently presiding over the meeting of the National Security Council at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that those in attendance at the meeting include Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Ministers of Defence, Bashir Magashi; Interior, Rau’f Aregbesola; Police Affairs, Alhaji Maigari Dingyadi and Geoffrey Onyaema, Foreign Affairs. Others are: the National Security Adviser to the President, retired Maj.-Gen. The West African Civil Society Forum WACSOF says it has observed with great dismay the use of lethal force by law enforcement agents on #ENDSARS peaceful protesters in Lagos, Nigeria, on 20" of October 2020.  WACSOF which is a coalition of Civil Society groups in West Africa said in a statement that the Nigerian constitution has embedded in it the principles that guarantee the fundamental human rights of all its atizens to life, adding that this  has been obviously violated.  WACSOF said it strongly condemned the brutal, despicable killing of young and peaceful #EndSARS protesters by armed security officals at the Lekki Toll Plaza in Lagos. Federal Government Owes Road Contractors N392billion - Fashola

The Federal Government is currently owing construction firms handling 711 road projects across the country, N392billion  said the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola.  The N392billion debt according to the Minister, is  far higher than the N276billion, proposed as budgetary allocation for road projects in 2021. Fashola who stated this in Abuja during budget defence session before the Senate Committee on Works, said "with the situation on ground, a stop has come for new projects and need for prioritizing of existing ones towards achieving completion of some  of them.'' Accordimg to him, the sum of N6.62trillion is needed by the governnent for funding the 711 road projects across the country but resources for that are not available now which makes prioritizing very important. He made the comments, which observers say are his clearest remarks yet on gay relationships, in a documentary directed by Evgeny Afineevsky.
