Image
The Supreme Court has dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party’s appeal challenging the victory of Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State at the November 16, 2019 governorship election in the state. A seven - man panel led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Tanko Muhammad, in a unanimous judgment, affirmed Bello's election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress. In the lead judgment prepared by Justice Inyang Okoro but read on his behalf by another member of the panel, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, the apex court affirmed the earlier July 4, 2020 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja and the May 23, 2020 majority verdict of the election petition tribunal, which had both upheld the Bello’s victory at the poll. The apex court resolved all the five issues raised for determination in the appeal against the PDP and its governorship candidate in the disputed poll, Musa Wada, who jointly filed the appeal. How DSS, IPOB Clashed In Enugu

The Enugu State Government-owned Community High School, Emene, on the outskirts of Enugu, the state capital, is a quiet environment known for academics. The school, in Enugu East Local Government Area, is also known as a playground for youths, including the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who use the school field to engage in physical exercises. However, Daily Trust on Sunday was informed by some residents of the area that the quietness of the school was practically destroyed on Sunday, August 23, 2020, when blood flowed following shootings between security forces and the youths during which both sides had casualties. An old gateman in the high school told a Daily Trust correspondent that, “The boys have been using this place for playing football, and after playing they would disperse peacefully. This had been going on for several months and there had never been a confrontation of any type. But last Sunday, I was told that a team of the Department of State Servi

Femi Fani Kayode, the Drug Addled Thug in Designer Wears - DAILY TRUST VIEWPOINT

Image
Femi Fani-Kayode, (more popularly known as FFK by the initials of his name) the designer wearing son of Chief Remilekun Fani-Kayode, (Fanny power) Deputy Premier of the Western region in the first republic is the perfect example of a pig still being a pig even with a lipstick on. Yes, he is on record to have attended the high-brow English public school Harrow and followed that up with a law degree from the prestigious University of London and a masters from the world famous Cambridge University. But if the idea was to mould him in character and training in the best traditions of an English gentleman having attended these institutions of British upper crust society, it has proven to be a waste of expensive English public school education. His bohemian lifestyle while in the United Kingdom included an addiction to drugs for which he had to seek spiritual and physical rehabilitation in Ghana. But till today he has not been totally cured of that habit which leads him to fits of boorishness

30th August, 2020 The National President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abuja. Dear NUJ President, Expression of Regret My recent verbal altercation with a member of your union, who is the Cross River State Correspondent of Daily Trust newspaper during a Press Conference I addressed in Calabar refers. I wish to convey my regrets to the reporter for my response to him and I also wish to express my regrets to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and members of the Nigerian media, whom I hold in high esteem. I believe that my reaction was disproportionate and unduly harsh even though I felt deeply provoked by the fact that the reporter asserted that I was being bankrolled by somebody for something that I was funding entirely on my own. I do hope that our relationship will continue as it has always been. Thanks for your understanding and be rest assured that I not only hold you, your union and your members in high este

The ex-minister, who began a tour of some states, especially those controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) states in July, visited Cross River last week. But the former minister, who felt offended by the question, described him as “very stupid”. “I could see from your face before you got here, how stupid you are. Don’t ever talk to me like that. Who do you think you’re talking to. Bankroll who? You think I am one of those ones you… from who, when, how? You have a small mind, a very small mind,” he had said. Do Away With Executive Orders or Risk Dictatorship, Ekweremadu Warns

Image
Unless Nigeria does away with executive legislation through Executive Order, the country may be heading towards authoritarianism and possible dictatorship, former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has said. Ekweremadu stated this while delivering a paper on “Executive Order and Democratic Governance” at the ongoing 60th Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, in Abuja on Wednesday. “Democracy envisages the division of governmental powers into three different arms, each with distinct powers and responsibilities clearly provided for in a country's grundnorm. The philosophy behind this compartmentalisation of powers is the need to preserve the liberty of citizens and prevent abuse and tyranny by one arm of government over the other. “Section 4 of the 1999 Constitution provides that the legislative powers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria shall be vested in the National Assembly. The National Assembly is empowered to exclusively legislate for the peace,

Don’t Derail Work at Enugu Airport, Rep Tells Railway Corporation

Image
Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Toby Okechukwu, has accused the Eastern District Manager of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, Osidipe Olusoji, of making comments that could jeopardize the scheduled reopening of the Akanu Ibiam international airport Enugu. It would be recalled that the Enugu state government had demolished houses close to the airport’s perimeter fence as part of ongoing remodeling of the airport. The demolished houses which were built on land belonging to the Nigeria Railway Corporation had attracted comments from Olusoji, who alleged that the Enugu state government was frustrating Federal Government’s efforts to extend its standard gauge railway project to the South East by demolishing NRC’s facilities. Okechukwu cautioned the NRC against any conducts or utterances capable of derailing the reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport for flight operations on schedule, advising the parastatal to instead declare details and scope

Fani-Kayode’s Attack on Our Reporter: Our Stand - Daily Trust

Image
The management of Media Trust Limited, publishers of Daily Trust and other titles, would like to condemn the reprehensible actions of Femi Fani-Kayode, who in a video clip now gone viral, verbally assaulted – repeatedly – our reporter, Eyo Charles in the course of doing his job. The encounter occurred in Calabar, Cross River State, in the morning of Thursday 20, August 2020 at a hotel, during a roundtable with invited journalists. During the roundtable, Charles asked Fani-Kayode who was bankrolling his recent trips around Nigeria, to which the ex-minister responded with a raised voice, insults, and eventually a threat to inflict bodily harm on our reporter. The barrage continued for some minutes, while bewildered journalists, including our reporter, looked on. The video clip, also released on one of the ex-minister’s social media accounts, was conveniently edited to exclude the question asked by Charles, totally devoid of mischief, simply sought clarification and information, like

My story by Journalist Verbally Assaulted By Femi Fani-Kayode

Image
Day former minister threw caution to the wind, drenched me with venom Eyo Charles, Calabar One that has risen to become spokesman to president of a country and later a minister aside other important public offices should be seen as one that is a diplomat and statesman. But Chief Femi FaniKayode failed in his public carriage last week when he rounded up his visit to Cross River State where he spent about a week, probably on the ticket of the state governor, Prof. Ben Ayade. To climax the visit, he had asked Alhaji Rasheed Olanrewaju of the AIT to invite some media houses so that he can relay report about his extensive guided tour of Ayade’s projects mostly in the southern part of the state. The invitation was kindly extended to Daily Trust newspaper, a frontline national newspaper, I work for since early 2011. I obliged the invitation not that I was deliberately left out of the guided tour led by Ayade but so that it would afford me opportunity to hear more from the former

Image
The Senate Tuesday, urged the federal government of Nigeria to from September this year, ensure remittance of 1% from federation account into the coffers of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure ( NASENI) in line with the extant laws. The fortune fell on NASENI when its Executive Vice Chairman, Professor Mohammed Sani Haruna made submissions on revenue projections of the agency for the 2021 budget before the Senate's joint Committee on Finance and National Planning. Professor Haruna in his submissions, lamented that the agency had never received 1% remittance from the federation account as provided for by the 2004 National Assembly Acts. The Act according to him, stipulates that NASENI shall draw from the federation account, 1% revenue accruing to the the Federal Treasury beginning from year 2000 but the agency had never received a kobo from the federation account as stipulated by the law. Moved by the submission, the joint committee led by Senator

Why Amnesty For Ex-Niger Delta Militants Should Not Be Scrapped - Omo-Agege

Image
Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege has called on the Federal Government to shelve alleged plans to scarp the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) for ex-agitators in the Niger Delta region. This comes as he charged people in the region to come up with a new narrative about holding leaders in the region to account. Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, to the Deputy President of the Senate said he made the remarks in Abuja at the weekend when he played host to a socio-political organization, New Era Forum. Describing the move as premature and ill-timed, the federal lawmaker said it will truncate the fragile peace in the region. In recent times there has been a debate for either the scrapping or retention of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, introduced by late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in 2009 for Niger Delta militants who had engaged in armed struggle for a better deal in the oil-rich region. Speaking on the matter, Omo-Agege said: "I don

Senator Abaribe in a statement in Abuja by his Media Adviser, Uchenna Awom said Ghana's action against nationals of other countries particularly Nigerians, points to State endorsement of xenophobic attacks. The Minority Leader, regrets and describes as a willful denigration of sub-regional brotherhood and one that is in clear conflict with ECOWAS protocol, Ghana's recent regulations, which stipulates that retail trade is the exclusive preserve of Ghanaians. Citizens Must Defend Fundamental Rights - Punch Newspaper Editorial

Image
The intolerant regime of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) bared its fangs yet again last week when security personnel violently broke up peaceful protests across the country. Television and social media footage of brutal attacks against unarmed citizens demonstrated vividly the martial disposition of the regime as it reacted to nationwide marches called by the #RevolutionNow movement to mark its first anniversary and to call for good governance. Violence in protests is strategically counterproductive as it undermines the legitimate protest. But #RevolutionNow protests were said to be peaceful. What is left is for the citizens to send the message loudly to Buhari and his brutish enforcers that they will neither surrender their hard-earned freedoms nor relent in demanding responsible governance. What happened last week in Lagos, Abuja, Osogbo and several other cities was a national disgrace. In commemoration of its first outing, the #RevolutionNow movement founded by an online publ
