Senate Passes Law Prohibiting Sexual Harassment In Tertiary Institutions

A Bill to protect female students in tertiary institutions from sexual harassment has been passed by the Senate.
The Bill sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo Agege provides for a jail term of 14 years or a fine of five million naira for convicted offenders.
Chairman Senate committee on Judiciary, human rights and legal matters, Opeyemi Bamidele read out the recommendations of the bill during plenary on Tuesday
A remarkable aspect of the Bill is the removal of mutual consent as defence in sexual harassment cases in univerisities.
Also it is worthy of note that sending explicit or suggestive pornographic messages to a student by a lecturer is seen as sexual harassment and is punishable with a jail term of two years and or a film fine of one million naira.
The bill will ve forwarded to the House of Representatives for concurrence before it is sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent into law.
