WAEC Confirms Authenticity Of Buhari's Result At Tribunal

Mr Henry Adewumi, Deputy Registrar of West African Examinations Council in charge of School Registration on Wednesday said that President Muhammadu Buhari obtained a Cambridge University West African Examination certificate with five credits. Adewumi made this known while testifying before the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja. It would be recalled that Buhari on Tuesday opened his defence against the petition filed by the PDP and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. The PDP and Abubakar, alleged in their petition challenging the victory of Buhari’, that results were transmitted to a central server managed by INEC. The two witnesses, Abba Kyari, two former secondary school mates testified to having obtained Cambridge University West Africa Examination Certificate in 1961.

Nigeria Senate Seeks Return of Budget Cycle To Jan/Dec

The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said on Tuesday that the desire of the ninth Senate and indeed the National Assembly is to have the budget cycle return to January to December. Lawan spoke shortly before the Senate adjourned for a two-month recess which was initially delayed to allow for the confirmation of the 43 nominees of the President for ministerial appointments. The screening exercise which started last Wednesday was concluded on Tuesday with the confirmation of all the 43 nominees. "The budget 2020 is going to be part of what we want to do differently from the previous sessions of the Senate," Lawan said. Lawan said the expectation of the lawmakers is that the 2020 appropriation bill will be presented to the National Assembly on their return from the recess in September. "It is our prayer and hope. The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan on Tuesday announced the chairmen and Vice chairmen of 69 standing committees of the upper chamber. Lawan made the announcement shortly before the Senate adjourned for a two-month recess which was initially delayed to allow for the confirmation of the 43 nominees of the President for ministerial appointments. Lawan said "the membership are at the moment undergoing formations for our committees to be properly constituted by the time we are back from recess in September. "With this, we are set to engage with the executive arm of government and we will start our legislative work as soon as we are back." Nigerian And US Goverments Sell Off $42m Yacht Owned By Diezani's Ally

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States Government have sold off a 65-metre Galactica Star super yacht worth $42m (N15.1bn) belonging to oil magnate Kola Aluko, who was accused of cheating Nigeria out of almost $1.8bn (N648bn) in siphoned crude oil sales. Although the yacht was priced at $42m, it could not be confirmed the exact amount that the vessel was sold. Aluko, who is an ally of a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has been on the radar of anti-graft agencies for the last four years. Veteran Sports Journalist, Akinloye Oyebanji, Dies at 62

Nigerian veteran sports journalist and retired Director, Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Akinloye Oyebanj, has died at the age of 62. His family confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Oyebanji, passed on at National Hospital, Abuja, on Saturday morning after protracted battle with heart failure. Mr Bukoye Oyebanji and Dr Steve Olarinoye, family member and closed friend, disclosed that Oyebanji had been ill for almost four months now and the family had spent millions of naira to save his life without any improvement. They said some time ago, he had the misfortune of losing his kidneys, and they were replaced successfully through a transplant in India. “But one of the side effects of kidney transplant is heart failure, which he had experienced on two occasions and survived.” NAN reports that Oyebanji served the NTA for 35 years in different capacities, including being a sports broadcaster, and later as General Manager (Sports). The Federal Government has obtained a court order to proscribe the Shiites' organisation formally referred to as the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday ordered the proscription of the Shiites’ movement as protests by the Islamic organisation rock Abuja. Saturday Punch reports that Justice Nkeonye Maha issued the order in a ruling in which she also designated the activities of the Shiite organisation in any part of Nigeria “as acts of terrorism and illegality." The court restrained “any person or group of persons” from participating in any form of activities involving or concerning the IMN “under any name or platform ”in Nigeria. Air Peace Aircraft Makes Emergency Landing at Lagos Airport

An Air Peace aircraft on Tuesday made an emergency landing and was partially damaged after it experienced difficulty landing at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The Boeing 737 aircraft, from Port Harcourt, was said to have experienced turbulence due to the weather and the pilot reportedly requested a longer runway, where it eventually landed. The airline while confirming the incident, said the pilot, Captain Simisola Ajibola noticed sudden weather changes when approaching Lagos and demanded to land on the international runway as it is longer and wider than the domestic runway. “After landing safely and rolling to the runway exit, the nose gear developed a problem and partially collapsed. The crew notified the airport authorities who quickly ensured the safe disembarkation of the passengers,” the airline said. The Channels TV reporter shot during today’s protests by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in Abuja is dead. The deceased, identified as Precious Owolabi, was a youth corps member serving in the Abuja station of Channels TV. He was aged 23. His death was a reminiscent of the first Boko Haram attack in Kano in which a Channels TV correspondent, Enenche Akogwu, was killed on January 20, 2012. Senior Nigerian Police Officer Killed In Shiite And Police Clash

Protesting members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria have shot dead a senior police officer, DCP Umar, who was in charge of Operations at the Federal Capital Territory Police Command. Umar was reportedly gunned down as he tried to pacify the rampaging Shi ’ite members who disrupted commercial activities and vehicular movement during their protest at the Federal Secretariat in Abuja on Monday. Punch newspaper reports that the police officer was immediately taken to an undisclosed hospital where he died. The protesters also destroyed vehicles while a Channels Television reporter was also hit by bullets; His identity and condition could not be immediately ascertained.

Catholic Church Confirms Attack on Priest by Herdsmen

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu on Saturday confirmed the attack on Rev. Fr. Ikechukwu Ilo by Fulani herdsmen along Numeh- Nenwe road in the Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State. There was palpable tension in Numeh and neighbouring communities in Nkanu East on Saturday following the attack on the Enugu Catholic priest. Father Ilo, a priest in charge of St. Patrick Church at Numeh, was reportedly attacked alongside one Mrs Chika Egbo on Wednesday evening. They were said to have sustained gunshot wounds. Confirming the attack on the priest, the Director of Communication, Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev. Fr. Benjamin Achi, said the attack was carried out by Fulani herdsmen.
