Speakership: CUPP Rejects Gbajabiamila, Begins Move to Prosecute Him For Perjury

The opposition Coalition of United Political Parties CUPP has described the majority leader of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila as unfit to contest the position of Speaker, based on his alleged criminal records.

Addressing a world press conference in Abuja, spokesman of CUPP Ikenga Imo-Ugochinyere said Gbajabiamila who worked as a lawyer in the United States in 2003 was convicted by the Supreme Court in the state of Georgia, for wilful dishonesty leading to his suspension as a legal practitioner for 36 months.

Ugochinyere while displaying several documents to back his claims, also alleged that Gbajabiamila lied under oath in his INEC form CF 001 signed in 2011 where he declared that he had never been convicted by any court or tribunal.

Although Gbajabiamila was reported to have paid back twenty five thousand dollars to his client three years later in 2006, the CUPP spokesman insists that President Muhammadu Buhari’s fight against corruption would be a joke if a shady character such as Gbajabiamila is imposed on Nigerians as speaker of the House of Representatives.

The CUPP also added that despite the fact that it is not interested in other candidates that will emerge as leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives in the 9th Assembly, it would however not accept plans to use open ballot system of voting in the process of the election.

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, had last week described Gbajabiamila as the choice of President Muhammadu Buhari for Speaker and not that of the party’s national leader, Bola Tinubu.
