Senate Asks Customs CG, Hameed Ali to Resign

The Senate has declared the Comptroller General of Customs, Retired Colonel Hameed Ali as unfit to hold public office and urged him to immediately resign from office.
This follows the failure of the Customs boss to appear before the Senate in appropriate Customs uniform to explain the proposed check on cars in the country to ensure appropriate payment of custom duty.

The Senate also insisted on the cancellation of the proposed check which they described as unacceptable and not in the interest of ordinary Nigerians, urging the Customs Service to find effective ways of collecting duties at the borders.

A Letter from the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami to the Senate had insisted that a suit has been filed at the Federal High Court by a legal practitioner, Mohammed Ibrahim restraining the National Assembly from compelling Hameed Ali, to put on the Customs uniform when he appears before the Senate.

In their contributions, Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe and Biodun Olujimi lamented that the principle of separation of powers as enshrined in the constitution is being threatened by the actions of the Executive.
The Senate also resolved to send a strong worded letter to the Executive arm of government warning it against further interference in the activities of the legislature.
