Five Dead, 13 Injured on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

The Federal Road Safety Corps has said that five persons died and 13 others injured in an accident that occurred on the Lagos - Ibadan expressway on Sunday. Ogun Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Clement Oladele, told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Ota, Ogun state, that the accident occurred at Wazobia, at about 9 .00 a .m . Oladele said two vehicles and 18 persons were involved in the accident that resulted in the death of five persons, while 13 others sustained various degrees of injuries. The sector commander explained that a commercial bus with registration number MGD 129 ZF coming from Ibadan to Lagos lost control and veered off the road and collided with a trailer with registration number DDA 121 XA that was parked by the road side. “The corpses of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary in Ipara General Hospital, while the survivors are also receiving treatment at Sagamu and Victory Hospital , Ogere ,’’ he said. He was said to have sustained head injury and had one of his limbs broken. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, confirmed the accident in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday. Shehu said Yusuf had undergone a successful surgery and was in a stable condition. Ekweremadu Donates to Gombe IDP Camps, Fetes Enugu Widows

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has donated gift items worth millions of naira to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Gombe State during the Christmas holiday. This was even as the Senator and his wife, Lady Nwanneka Ekweremadu, feted 250 widows from Enugu and distributed wrappers and food items to them. At the first presentation, which was to IDPs from Borno and Yobe States, Ekweremadu, represented by his Special Assistant on Political Matters and former Chairman of Conference of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Inuwa Garba, assured the IDPs that the National Assembly and President Muhammadu Buhari administration were working hand-in-hand to totally end insurgency so they could return to their homes to resume their normal lives. “But until we achieve that, you deserve all the support the government, kind-spirited Nigerians, and the international community can offer to ameliorate your challenges and put smiles on your faces”, he said.

Gunmen Raid Maina’s House, Handcuff Guard

Gunmen on Christmas Eve (Sunday) raided the Kaduna home of the former Chairman of the Presidential Task Team on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina. The gunmen were allegedly said to be in search of cash and ammunition in the house. Residents of Kano Street, Kawo New Extension, Kaduna where the house is located, said some of the gunmen came in military uniform, while others were in mufti. The spokesman for the Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Aliyu Mukhtar, who confirmed the incident, noted that the command got a report from the Divisional Police Office in Kawo regarding the raid. “We got a report from the DPO Kawo of Police Station regarding the raid on Maina ’s house. But we are yet to confirm whether they are really officials of the EFCC. Investigation is ongoing ,” he told a Punch newspaper correspondent on phone on Monday. Against the latest round of fuel scarcity rocking many parts of the country, private oil marketers are calling for government intervention to enable them to access foreign exchange at a special rate for the importation of Premium Motor Spirit ( petrol ). According to them, selling the product at N145 per litre is no longer feasible with the current exchange rate. Private marketers stopped fuel importation last year due to shortage of foreign exchange and increase in crude prices, which they said had made it unprofitable to import petrol and sell same at N145 per litre. The Federal Government paid € 3 m for the release of some Chibok schoolgirls who were in Boko Haram custody, according to Wall Street Journal. In 2014, Boko Haram insurgents had kidnapped 276 girls from Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok in Borno State. Of the 276, 163 are now free: 57 fled in the early days after their abduction, three escaped later, and a Swiss -coached mediation secured 103. Twenty -one of the 103 were freed on October 13, 2016, while the remaining 82 were freed on May 6 this year. In a detailed report on the incident, WSJ said while €1m was paid for the 21 first freed, additional €2m accompanied the five Boko Haram commanders that were exchanged with the next batch: the 82 girls. The Nigerian Power industry has achieved yet another national peak of 5,222.3MW of electricity effectively transmitted in the national grid on December 18, 2017 at 9pm. In a statement signed by the GM Public Affairs Ndidi Mbah, TCN said that this milestone achievement, is the highest ever recorded in the nation’s power sector to-date. This surpassed the 5,155.9MW achieved on December 8, 2017 and the earlier peak of 5,074.70MW, achieved on February 2, 2016. Four Million Nigerians Have Lost Their Jobs This Year–NBS

Between January and September this year, 4.07 million Nigerians became unemployed, an analysis of the unemployment report for the third quarter released by the National Bureau of Statistics has revealed. The bureau, in the report made available to Punch newspaper on Friday, stated that the number of Nigerians that became unemployed rose from 11.92 million in the first quarter of this year to 13 . 58 million and 15 .99 million in the second and third quarters respectively. It said between the second quarter and third quarter, the number of economically active or working age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased from 110 .3 million to 111.1 million. The NBS report said the increasing unemployment and underemployment rates implied that although Nigeria's economy was officially out of recession, domestic labour market was still fragile and economic growths in the past two quarters in 2017 had not been strong enough to provide employment in Nigeria ’s domestic labour market.

Troops Kill 20 Insurgents, Capture 17, Rescue 100 Civilians

The Nigerian Army on Wednesday said its troops had killed 20 Boko Haram insurgents in a clearance operation in the Lake Chad Basin. Col. Timothy Antigha, the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, made the disclosure in a statement in Maiduguri. Antigha said that the troops captured 17 insurgents, rescued 100 people, recovered vehicles and ammunition. He said the six soldiers that sustained injuries in the operation were referred to military medical facility for treatment. Peoples Democratic Party members have protested at the House of Representatives over the defection of a member, Mr. Raphael Igbokwe, to the All Progressives Congress. Igbokwe, who is from Imo State, first came to the House in 2011. PDP members immediately walked out in protest after the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, allowed the defection to stand. Adedoja Asks Court To Annul Secondus' Election As PDP Chairman

A chairmanship aspirant in the recently -concluded Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP )’ s election, Prof. Taoheed Adedoja, has asked a Federal High Court in Abuja to annul the choice of Uche Secondus as chairman. He also asked the court to order a fresh election, adding that the post-convention peace panel, headed by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, ignored him. Adedoja, who disclosed this in Abuja yesterday, said his name was wrongly spelt by the organisers of the convention as Taoheed Oladoja, instead of Taoheed Adedoja. The clerk of the National Assembly, Mohammed Sani Omolori has described the late former clerk of the Assembly, Alhaji Gidado Idris as a man of peace. A statement signed by the Secretary, Research and Information Directorate in the National Assembly, Dibal Ishaku Adamu quoted the current clerk, Sani Omolori as saying, “Nigeria has lost an illustrious son in the person of late Alhaji Gidado Idris former Clerk to the National Assembly and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).” The statement said the clerk made the comment while on a condolence visit to the deceased home, he also described the late Idris as a man who set the pace both in the Public Sector and the Legislature. NAFDAC Wants Public To Blow Whistle On Fake Drug Manufacturers

Prof. Christiana Adeyeye, Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), on Monday called on Nigerians to report any form of illegal drug production in their environments. Adeyeye made the call at the ongoing 8th Annual Symposium of the Health Writers’ Association of Nigeria ( HEWAN ) in Lagos. Atletico Madrid and France forward Antoine Griezmann has apologised after initially telling his social media followers to "calm down" in response to outrage he sparked by painting himself black as part of a fancy-dress outfit. Griezmann tweeted a photo of himself dressed as a black basketball player. He later deleted the post, along with a second message that read: "Calm down everyone. I'm a fan of the Harlem Globetrotters and this is a tribute." A third message contained his apology. It read: "I recognise that it was insensitive on my part. FAAN Investigates Alleged Theft Of Crew Baggage

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has begun  investigations into the case of a burgled aircraft  on Tuesday. The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, made this known in a statement issued on Sunday in Lagos. Reports say the burgling of  a Vista Jet aircraft with Call Sign VJT 584, reportedly occurred,  while  it was taxiing at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. Yakubu said a combined team of FAAN’s Aviation Security (AVSEC)  department, the Airport Police Command and other relevant security agencies had begun  investigation into the incident. “The team was set up to reveal the perpetrators of this act and to prevent a recurrence ,” she said. 90% of Nigerian Nurses Lack Basic Life Support skills – Group

Inspire Nurses Network Africa (INNA), an NGO, on Sunday in Abuja said 90 per cent of Nigerian Nurses lacked basic life support skills on emergency care. Josiah Okesola, Leader of the group, disclosed this while fielding questions from the News Agency of Nigeria. Okesola, who was accompanied by Mrs Regina Askia-Williams, emphasised that every nurse was supposed to be trained on emotional intelligence and critical thinking as well as basic life support skills. She said these would enable them to respond effectively to emergency anywhere they found themselves.
