Buhari Withholds Assent To Electoral Act Amendment Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to the Electoral Act amendment Bill which was recently passed by the National Assembly.

This is contained in a letter transmitted to the National Assembly and read by the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday in plenary.

According to the letter, President Buhari noted that the amendment to the sequence of elections infringes on the rights of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to organize, undertake and supervise elections.

It would be recalled that the amendment to section 25 of the electoral act which reorganized the sequence of elections different from the one earlier released by INEC, generated controversies.

Some lawmakers had insisted that the legislation was not only biased but lacked due process.
